Senior Color Guard
Through the efforts of its first Captain, Wilbur Buron, the Color Guard Unit was initially formed in 1970
-- at the original American Legion Post located in St. Anthony Village. In 1986, along with the
establishment of the Tri-City Post in New Brighton, the Color Guard (and the St. Anthony Post itself)
was merged into the Tri-City American Legion Post (Columbia Heights, New Brighton and St. Anthony.)Since then, the Color Guard has been very active, participating in many competitions.
(Competitions are held on a District level, State level and National level.) Tri-City's Senior
Color Guard has earned the reputation of being one of the area's premier units, with the following
record of competitive achievements:
Numerous 1st Place Finishes in District Competition
At least twenty 1st Place State Championship Finishes
A 2nd Place Finish at the National Level
In addition to competitive appearances, the Color Guard is involved in many
other activities on a regular basis. These include the following:
Performing Rituals for deceased American Legion members.
Participating in memorial services for the deceased (services
at mortuaries, as well as at cemeteries.)Appearing in numerous area parades.
Presenting the Colors at area sporting events and activities.
Providing educational lectures and information on the topic of
Flag Etiquette to area school groups, Cub Scout, Boy Scount and
Girl Scout troops, as well as for other area organizations.Handling Flag retirement services for our communities -- performing
the American Legion Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags
(typically held the first Saturday following Labor Day each year).
Through this program, roughly 500 flags have been properly and
respectfully retired annually.Participating in Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day,
Flag Day and other programs at area schools and community centers.Presenting the Colors at monthly Post meetings.
